Chapter 14

Chloé

Three nights later, I sit in the living room, worried beyond belief. The wind howls outside like a pack of wolves, rattling the windows of the old farmhouse. I glance at my phone as it lights up with another call from Mom and Dad.

"We can't make it home in this storm, honey. We’re going to stay at the Wilson's tonight. You and Alex be safe."

I sigh, setting the phone down. Just Alex and me on the whole ranch tonight.

Speak of the devil. He pokes his head in the kitchen. "Was that your parents? Are they making it back tonight?"

"Nope, looks like it's just us." I try to sound nonchalant, but my heart races a little. This storm is terrible, and I'm worried about the animals.

My stomach rumbles. "Ugh," I groan. "I'm starving." With the electricity cutting in and out due to the storm, my microwave meal plan might be out of the question.

Just then, the electricity cuts out completely.

"Follow me." Alex grins, coming closer to give me his hand. I take it reluctantly, and he pulls me to my feet, guiding me to the kitchen.

Once in the kitchen, I sit on a chair in the midst of candlelight, and Alex toys with something in his hands as he lights the gas stove with a match. "Well, no reason we can't still have a decent meal. Hand me that pot?"

I stand and pass the pot, leaning against the counter. Thunder cracks outside like a whip. Alex doesn't flinch; he hunts down some vegetables and starts a small pot of rice. It turns out that stir-fry is on the menu for tonight.

"Impressive knife skills," I say. "I didn't take you for a chef."

He chuckles. "Hey, we city boys have hidden talents. Cooking calms me."

A gush of wind comes out of nowhere, and I realize there must be a window open or glass broken somewhere. The candles flicker out and we're plunged into darkness. I freeze and my pulse quickens.

Alex's voice comes through the blackness. "Don't worry. I've got this."

A match flares, casting his face in a warm glow. He lights the candles again, eyes twinkling.

"Nothing’s stopping us now."

I relax, laughing softly. "Well, aren't you resourceful?"

"I better go find where the wind is coming from. Watch over our gourmet dinner, will you?"

I nod as I stand and toss the veggies to prevent them from burning. He returns moments later.

"Was a window opened?" I ask.

"My bedroom window was open, but it’s closed tight now."

“Alright," I say, rubbing my hands together. "Now that that's taken care of, I'm starving."

I'm telling Alex about my disastrous attempt at making macaroons when I’m distracted by a distant sound that I know well. It’s an anguished moooo. I instantly berate myself for not checking on the cows before now. I was too wrapped up in the moment.

"I heard that too," Alex says grimly.

I nod, already moving towards the door. "It's one of the cows; something's wrong."

We rush into the raging storm, icy rain pelting our faces. Alex shields me from the worst of it as we sprint to the barn.
